 Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
On what days is the COMMERCIAL halibut fishery open?

In 2009 the commercial directed halibut fishery was open on June 24 and July 8. The catch limit was taken during these days, so after July 8 the directed fishery was closed for the remainder of 2009. Open dates scheduled preseason had been June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5, August 19, September 2, September 16 and September 30 (every other Wednesday). From the Washington-Oregon-California (Area 2A) total allowable catch, the non-Indian commercial fishery is allocated 31.7% of the non-Indian share. The commercial fishery consists of a directed halibut fishery and an incidental catch fishery during the salmon troll fishery.

Q:
How much does my monster halibut weigh?
If you know the length of your halibut, you can find its corresponding weight on the IPHC length-weight table.
Q:
Closed here, open there... what can I do where?

Anglers may FISH FOR Pacific halibut only in areas open to Pacific halibut fishing and LAND Pacific halibut only at ports located in areas open to Pacific halibut fishing. No person shall be in possession of halibut on a vessel while fishing in a closed area.

Q:
From which quota is my catch taken ?
Pacific halibut landed at a port will count toward the quota for the subarea in which that port is located.
Pictures and descriptions of other flatfish species are also available.
Q:
What subareas are found in Oregon?
Subarea: Boundaries:
Columbia River Leadbetter Pt. (WA) to Cape Falcon (OR)
Central coast Cape Falcon to Humbug Mt.
South coast South of Humbug Mt. (including California)
Q:
Can we plan on a two-fish bag limit after Labor Day?

Even if much of the quota remains after Labor Day, a two-fish bag limit is not guaranteed. The Catch Sharing Plan states: "After the Labor Day weekend, the IPHC, NMFS, and ODFW will consult to determine whether increasing the Oregon central coast bag limit to two fish is warranted ..."
